Mentos Explosions!

Learner:  Shreya  Learning Coach: Luisa Maloni    Date: 13th March, 2015
Learning Area: iExperience: Mentos, Coke and Baking Soda Experience
Learning Observed
We had an explosive afternoon this Friday as we experimented with Mentos, Coke and baking soda. All of the learners were very excited to see what would happen when we put the lollies (Mentos) into the coke. I asked the learners what they thought might happen when we put the Mentos lollies into the coke. Shreya’s answer is recorded below in the video clip.
Evidence of learning
Shreya is able to make a prediction based on her previous experiences with experiments.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Shreya is demonstrating her ability to make Connections between what she knows already and what is new. She is making sense of and building her understandings of these new experiences. (Thinking). In sharing her ideas with the group she is practising the key competency of Participating and Contributing.
Next Learning Steps

  • Ask simple questions about new experiences e.g. I wonder what would happen if… or I wonder why….etc…
  • Review her predictions at the end of an experiment

Learner: Shreya           Learning Coach: Mr Hattie           Date: 3 March 2015
Learning Area: LH2
Learning Observed
At math time we were learning about how to measure objects in the classroom using blocks as a unit of measurement. Shreya had been working well and was proud of all the way she had worked in class. When I asked Shreya to let me know what she was learning she was able to explain it wonderfully. Shreya was able to say what she had learnt, what she enjoyed about it and recap the lesson. This is great student voice. It will allow us to personalise the learning.

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Shreya has shown thinking and understanding because she understood what she was meant to be doing. This allowed her to reflect on her learning with personal comments. She is showing managing self as she did not need further instructions to complete the task. Shreya related to others because she was working with a partner during this activity.
Next Learning Steps
Shreya’s next learning steps are:
  • use her reflections to create her next steps in terms of her goals.
  • to verbalise what she could have improved on to develop her learning.
  • Write her reflections in her learning pathway.
